When to use personal protective equipment.
The use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is to be used or worn by a person to minimise risk to the person’s health or safety and includes a wide range of clothing and safety equipment depending on your workplace. It is used mostly when the worker or PCBU is in risk of being harmed or severely injured.
For example:,
gloves and toe guards should be worn when lifting heavy objects to prevent injury to hand and feet.
gloves and a mask can be worn to protect workers when changing printer toner.
PPE is also regarded as a last resort to protect against risks to health and safety. It must be possible to do a job using safety methods before requiring PPE. If not possible then safety guards must be put in place as well at making sure everyone is wearing PPE properly. The reasons why PPE is a last resort because it only protects the worker wearing it and not everyone around them. It is also very hard to keep track and make sure everyone is wearing it properly because if a worker is not wearing it correctly then they are endangering themselves
