Purpose of electrical tagging
The standard for testing and tagging applies to all types of electrical equipment in offices, factories and so on (ie tools, machines, computers, even jugs and cooling fans). The Australian standard includes a table that sets out testing and inspection intervals for various types of equipment from 3 months (for equipment that is high use, high risk, or hire equipment) to up to 5 years.
Electrical tagging is necessary to make sure that all types of electrical equipment in the work place is in a safe condition to be used. This ensures the safety of the workers.
The Standard states that in Australia new items must have a tag stating the item is 'New to Service', its date of entry into service, the date it will be tested. The purpose of this is to identify at what date this equipment needs to be tested to make sure that there are no faults and that it will continue to be safe. Tagging will ensure that equipment remains safe.
The checking and tagging of equipment as per AS/NZS 3760 can be done either by a qualified electrician or by someone who has successfully completed an approved course at a TAFE college.
Tagging will also identify equipment that has developed a fault and must not be used until repairs have been carried out.
